Kirloskar Legacy

“Understanding of one's environment and reality is essential to manufacture path-breaking industrial implements.” - Mr. L. K. Kirloskar

The Kirloskar Legacy stands for a tradition of excellence for more than a century now. A personification of lofty values and visionary goals, the name ‘Kirloskar’ is engraved on numerous nation-building milestones.  Although today, the Kirloskar Group stands as an enormous industrial empire, it has emerged from a simple beginning…

Laxmanrao Kashinath Kirloskar, the founder of the Kirloskar Group was born on June 20th 1869, in a small village, Gurlahosur in Belgaum district. Initially a painting enthusiast, he later took up mechanical drawing later he set up his first venture in 1888. Laxmanrao strongly believed that agricultural implements must fit the milieu they are used in, which led him to manufacture Kirloskar’s pioneering products - fodder cutter in 1901 and India’s first iron plough in 1904.

India’s first iron plough from the Kirloskar Group not only became an instrument of wealth for an entire society but also started an entire revolution in India. In 1910, Laxmanrao started his ‘Farm Implements Factory’ in an arid waste land by the side of a renowned railway station, named Kundal Road. The station is now called as Kirloskarwadi. At Kirloskarwadi, Laxmanrao realized his yet another dream of building his own industry and community for his employees. He strongly believed in the theory of creation of wealth.

After Laxmanrao, his enterprising son, a global thinker, Mr. S.L. Kirloskar took over the mantle of the Kirloskar group. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from MIT in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Mr. S. L. Kirloskar was among the batch of first Indians to graduate from MIT. Even during the pre-independence era, he firmly believed in the potential of his own country and always looked at India as a part of the rest of the world and worked towards making India globally competitive. After the end of World War II, the group grew rapidly under his leadership. He is credited with developing the manufacture of diesel engine indigenously as an import substitute after India attained independence. Under his dynamic leadership, Kirloskar Group enjoyed one of the highest growth rates in Indian history

As the demand for Kirloskar products proliferated across the nation, soaring markets queued for product diversification. With that notion, Kirloskar launched its first range of pumps. These revolutionary pumps were pivotal in bringing drinking water to various Indian cities. The venture was yet another successful venture of the company which further laid the foundation of establishing ‘Kirloskar Oil Engines Ltd.’ in 1946..

Like any other visionary venture, the company focused its energies to go beyond boundaries in order to put India on the international map. Consequently, the company collaborated with SEMT Pielstick, France. Post this collaboration, Kirloskar bolstered its manufacturing further with some significant certifications in the line which included – ISO 9001 Certification for Manufacturing Operations (1992), QS 9000 Certification (1998), ISO 14001 Certification for Environment-friendly Manufacturing Facilities (1999), Self-certification status from the Indian Army and TS16949 accreditation (2004)

Today, building on its core engineering strength, the group’s scope of operations spans a gamut of industrial equipment’s. From a wide range of eco-friendly diesel engines, silent generating sets, pumps and farm mechanization equipments etc the Kirloskar Group is amongst India's largest engineering conglomerates.
